Primary Purpose:  
Ensuring Uplift provides a safe and clean learning environment. Responsible for providing back-up and fill-in support by stepping in as a campus custodian on an as-needed basis. When not needed at campuses, perform routine and non-routine cleaning and restorative janitorial tasks.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Ensuring the safety of all campus staff and scholars
  • Removing or correcting potentially unsafe conditions
  • Reporting unsafe practices to campus leadership and supervisor
Ensure that all campus facilities and grounds are properly maintained 
  • Provide fill-in support on an as-needed basis across all campuses
  • Perform routine janitorial duties on campuses and support buildings
    • Sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, shampoo, buff and other cleaning tasks
    • Clean restrooms, hallways, cafes
    • Perform floor maintenance such as cleaning and buffing
    • Removing graffiti
    • Perform café duty (cleaning tables, removing trash, putting cafe tables up and down)
  • Perform non-routine janitorial duties in and around Uplift buildings and property such as, but not limited to:
    • Grout restoration
    • Floor stripping and waxing operations
    • Exterior window washing and pressure washing
    • Carpet and rug shampooing
    • Upholstery shampooing and cleaning
    • High-dusting on an aerial lift
  • Assist in summer maintenance tasks such as paint, replace light bulbs, move furniture and patch walls
Equipment and supplies
  • Properly use and maintain equipment such as floor scrubbers, restroom cleaning machines, floor buffers and electronic sprayers
  • Keep equipment clean, organized and serviceable at all times
  • Perform maintenance and repair on janitorial equipment
  • Maintain an adequate inventory of consumables
Driving responsibilities
  • Drive company assigned vehicle and follow company policies related to driving
  • Maintain vehicle clean and organized
  • Take vehicle to maintenance shop when maintenance is due and ensure vehicle documents are up to date
  • Report vehicle maintenance issues promptly
Other duties
  • Research and stay up to date on procedures, studies, products, and equipment related to the janitorial industry
  • Provide recommendations and make suggestions to increase operational efficiency
  • Provide emergency assistance in response to floods, sewage back-ups, vandalism, or other incidents 
  • Transport janitorial supplies and equipment as needed
  • Report any safety concerns or maintenance issues to supervisor immediately or as appropriate
  • Oversee after-hours and weekend on-call maintenance service as requested
  • Report receipts and expenditures to the accounting department, Network Facilities Manager, and the Facilities Director
  • Use a computer-based ticketing system to track service and repair orders
  • Communicate daily to supervisor via phone, e-mail and/or text messages
 
Education, Experience, and/or Certification(s) 
  • Education Requirements: High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.  
  • Experience Requirements: A minimum of two years in an custodian/janitor role in a commercial building, a building maintenance/facilities management role.
  • Special Skills/Certifications: Certifications in the janitorial industry, experience performing floor stripping/waxing/buffing are desired but not required.  
 
Required Skills/Abilities: 
  • Communication Skills: Ability to receive and understand verbal and written instructions in English, ability to receive or convey technical and complicated concepts, ability to read and understand technical manuals and instructions.
  • Bilingual Skills: No bilingual skills are required. Spanish speaking skills are a plus but not required. 
  • Driving Skills: This position requires driving an assigned vehicle on a daily basis. Applicant must posses and maintain a valid Class C driver’s license and have a clean driving record. Applicant must be comfortable driving a large cargo van and/or large truck with a service body and have the ability to pass yearly driver training.
  • Technology: To perform this job successfully, an individual should possess basic to intermediate ability to learn and use computer software, possess basic typing speed (~15 WPM), and possess a basic understanding and use of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel, Word). Applicant must also be able to use a smart phone to send and receive photos and text messages and have an intermediate understanding of how to use Android based apps.  
  • Work Ethic: This position will may not have daily face-to-face interaction with their direct supervisor. In order to perform this job successfully, an individual must possess higher than usual “self-starter” mentality and the ability to perform tasks without direct supervision or specific instructions.

  • Occasional exposure to fumes, chemicals or airborne particles, extreme cold and extreme heat
  • Vision: distance, color, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, driving in the dark or during adverse weather conditions
  • Occasional exposure to loud equipment
 
Work Environment:  
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work in a wide variety of environments as found in all areas of the school(s) and central offices: continual walking and standing; frequent heavy lifting and carrying; noise level is moderate and may have frequent interruptions. Tasks are regularly performed with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as strong odors, fumes, dusts, wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, disease, pathogenic substances and toxic/poisonous agents. Starting Salary: $17.50/hr
