Primary Purpose:
The Payroll Specialist is responsible for accurately processing payrolls for all Uplift Education staff on a timely basis; creating payroll adjustment runs, maintaining payroll garnishment files, reviews payroll data entry for accuracy. This position will also be responsible for reviewing new hire/transfer validation, timecard support, and substitute verification support, exception reporting as well as providing payday troubleshooting and error management. This individual serves as the primary liaison with the HR department, and is responsible for ensuring data integrity and quality, as well as overall payroll accuracy.

Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Process Semi-Monthly, and Monthly non-exempt and exempt payroll.
  • Execute timecard, absences processing and interface with payroll.
  • Process accurately employees pay for items including special payments and retro payments.
  • Reviews payroll data entry on changes and additions on the payroll register to ensure accuracy of payroll for semi-monthly, monthly, and substitute payroll runs.
  • Keep informed of regulations, interpretations and practices pertaining to the payroll accounting functions.
  • Investigates pay inquiries and serves as primary point of contact for resolution of issues.
  • Assists in training of campus administration on payroll system functions (i.e., timecard approval, stipend and function pay process).
  • Creates and processes monthly, semi-monthly, substitute payrolls through Payroll system including generating ACH files and paper checks.
  • Inputs deductions and garnishment orders into Payroll systems and maintains related files.
  • Serves as liaison between Talent Management and Payroll, building a strong relationship with the Talent Management team. Troubleshoots and researches discrepancies/errors, and proactively makes changes based on root cause analysis as needed.
  • Creates and maintains employee direct deposit enrollment. Also creates ACH pre-note files for upload to bank.
  • Proactively recommends changes to processes to increase efficiency. Documents and keeps process manual current.
  • Coordinates payroll matters involving account coding for stipends and function pay with Talent Management & other departments.
  • Ensures compliance with department policies, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy and employment law.
  • Responds to various audit and tax agency queries and requests.
  • Communicates with employees and other departments to answer questions and resolves problems.
  • Maintain employee’s confidence and protect payroll operations by keeping information confidential.
  • This position communicates with employees and others department to ensure wages are accurate and employees are paid in a timely manner. 

Education, Experience, and/or Certification(s)
  • Education Requirements:  Associate’s Degree preferred; may substitute equivalent work experience for degree preference.
  • Experience Requirements: Previous experience with payroll/accounting
  • Special Skills/Certifications: Payroll certification a plus
 
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Communication Skills: Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Bilingual Skills: Spanish is a plus but not required
  • Technology: Ability to use software to develop spreadsheets, databases and work in Excel

Physical Demands: Prolonged sitting; occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting; repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching; occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
 
Work Environment: Standard office environment

Starting Salary: $22/hr
